Seven years, and you did nothing? Not buying the claim "doctors did nothing". Not even slightly.

@mf-- Still not buying it. Doctors are responsible people, and communicate any important information. Unfortunately patients don't always listen - especially if they don't like what they're hearing. Other patients just avoid medical treatment altogether, then blame some doctor in the deep past for not magically guessing everything that might happen in the future.

@WhatIsSanity Sorry, no. I'm in public health (have been for decades), and I guarantee that if patients are proactive, truthful, and compliant, they do not fall through the cracks. Even in a public system.

@Capitan_Captain Thank you. This is exactly what I've been trying to say. Patients need to be good advocates for themselves (or have a relative advocate for them if they're confident to do it themselves). We all have to keep up with our routine checks, and mention anything new or unusual.

@peenyyt4921 No, it almost never does. In 99% of these cases, it was patient non-compliance. I've been in this game for decades, and while I accept there are less than stellar doctors out there, most are responsible enough to cover the basics. The problem is almost always patients, I'm sorry to say. You'd be amazed what people will do and tell themselves, to avoid jumping through the hoops they should be jumping through. And amazed at how long people ignore things before seeking treatment. And also amazed at the things people don't tell their doctors. People are afraid. People are lazy. People don't want the bother. People are forgetful. People don't recognise the seriousness of symptoms, etc etc etc. We're all capable of that, if we're not doctors ourselves. Doctors on the other hand, only have ONE job, and that is to find out what's wrong with you. They're hardly going to refuse to do so, given that, since they serve no other purpose. You have to grasp that crucial difference, to appreciate why it's almost always a patient thing.

@WhatIsSanity No, it isn't. Doctors can only act upon what they're given. Patients, because they're not doctors, cannot always present the right information - or even present at all until something has advanced. Patients must be good advocates for themselves. If you feel you can't be, take someone with you who can be. And on the contrary, I've encountered all sorts of utter dicks in the medical profession. But never once have I encountered deliberate negligence. Keep in mind I'm around doctors all the time, and have been most of my adult life. On the other hand, I encounter patient "negligence" almost daily. It's not a moral contest, so please don't waste energy being offended. It's simply the different psychological and technical position of the two parties. That's why patients have to be good advocates for themselves.

@Capitan_Captain No, not in Europe (or America), but I am aware that Americans will hold back on visits and investigations due to cost. While a for-profit healthcare system is diabolically evil for that reason, it's still not the doctor's fault if things aren't picked up under those conditions.

@MrBflatt The vast majority are. Why do you think it's so difficult to get into Medical School? Why do you think it takes seven or eight years to qualify? And arrogance does not make someone a bad doctor. Some of the best surgeons and specialists out there, are pains in the ass.

@MrBflatt Once again, a doctor has only one job to do when presented with your case. You, as the patient, have many jobs to do besides figuring out what's wrong with you. You have MANY competing interests in that moment. Your doctor doesn't.

@snowmonster42 The OP was talking about seizures. If you present to a general practioner (aka family doctor) with seizures, you're going to be referred to a neurologist as a matter of urgency. No doctor will ignore seizures. That's like ignoring a heart attack, or a severed limb.
