That would be their family.

@alistaircraig7849 True. In most cases, we no longer have any excuses after a certain age, but in this case I'm pretty sure the woman has a developmental delay of some kind. Probably fetal alcohol spectum disorder.

@jdp2828 On the contrary, 86 year olds with dementia should not be listened to when their choices put them at risk. You need to have them declared 'incompetent' by their doctors, and exercise power of attorney. Families who 'allow' elderly and inform relatives to make decisions as though they're competent 30 year olds, are negligent. You HAVE to step in and take charge.

@ccalcote9125 It's a disgrace on the part of the FAMILY, not the doctors or hospitals. Families are supposed to rally to take care of their elders.
9
@ry-land- Families who fail to take care of their elders, are responsible.
9
@hazeleyes1951 The problem is that this isn't normal physiology. It just doesn't happen in a healthy individual. There is either alcoholism, cancer, or an endocrine disorder. Sometimes even plain old obesity will do it.
9
@douglaslang2218 That's fine, but she's not in control of things. Once we're no longer able to care for ourselves, we have to allow family to make our decisions for us. That's their responsibility - and it's our responsibility to allow them to do it.
8
@sallypope7871 He was 86 years old. He's nowhere near capable of caring for a heavy old woman.
8
@HelloKitty-jz5gm Definitely ascites
8
@natalieperez2666 Sure. And who's paying for that? In home privately contracted care is insanely expensive.
7
@popartpistol Why would a family hire an 86 year old carer? That's insane.
6
Why wouldn't she be able to walk out? I've had three (without pain relief), and walked after all of them. When you haven't had pain meds, you're fine after. Tired, but not disabled.
6
TheAdderkop Very likely. One of our obligations as we age, is to be a good and decent person. Barring any dementia, we owe it to those taking care of us to be exemplary in our behaviour.
5
@annabrahamson4320 Not really. It's not a 'body type'. In the absence of cancer or alcoholism, it's usually a result of a very sedentary lifestyle, which in turn causes metabolic sluggishness.
5
@intheparlance No two year old has a waist. And if your middle is 'large' it's almost certainly because you're overweight and don't exercise enough. Once again, it's not a natural state, to carry excess adipose tissue (fat) around the middle. Even if your genetics .. your frame .. is for a broader waist, being fit and having a low BMI will mean it's barely noticable.
5
There aren't any other options. Family is it. But it should have been the kids and grandkids, not the 86 year old.
4
@msy408 There aren't enough social workers on the planet, to meet the needs of an ever increasing number of people who just don't even try in life. Besides, social workers rarely fix anything.
4
@evilspyke5760 When you are no longer caring for yourself, you have no choice but to allow others to make decisions for you. It's the natural process.
3
TheAdderkop BINGO!
3
@loveli420 It wasn't "getting up", as I didn't lie on a bed for any of mine. I was active throughout.
3
@cmdjk1 For real! They act as though it's some dire medical procedure. So odd!
3
@randallhorlick4259 What's wrong, is the expectation that someone else with take care of YOUR family members.
3
@beverlybalius9303 That's not a hospital's job. They keep people alive then move them out. That's it. That's all they do. That specialized care you speak of, is something YOU have to provide. Either by paying for it, or doing it yourself.
3
@marcisunshine18 That's normal in most of the world. Our problem is we think we shouldn't have to do it.

@Trysaratop Exactly. When a society tolerates bad behaviour from adults, this is the result. Old people in Japan, Korea, Singapore, China, Africa, etc etc .. don't behave badly. Those societies train them out of it early.

@Woohchaiell In an ideal world, and if she was extremely wealthy, sure. In the real world however, if you're dependent upon others, you have no choice but to hand responsibility to them. Since the beginning of time, that's how it's worked. Parents are responsible for their kids, then their kids are responsible for them in turn. If we're lucky we'll live long enough to be unable to care for ourselves. Either mentally or physically. At that point we can still have our preferences etc, but only in the small day to day choices. We don't get to choose where we live or how we live. It's our kids' turn to make those kinds of decisions. This is the natural order, and being a mature adult means accepting that. Multigenerational families in other cultures are able to co-exist because the elders don't try to retain an independence they no longer have. They don't make things 'difficult' by refusing to pass the reins to the next generation.
2
Women, PLEASE have high standards for the males you allow into your lives. And for gods sake, don't live alone when you're elderly!
2
When the elderly are cared for within their own family (assuming their family are normal and therefore decent) is far superior.

OMG .. the grandma. As much as I hate this woman for being such a terrible parent to those two babies, she didn't have a chance with a mother like that. ALL blame goes to that disgusting pig of a woman. The ascites tell us everything we need to know, if her behaviour didn't.
1
She stayed in his house. While women had no choice but to stay in abusive relationships a generation or two ago, they do now. Especially when they have their own income and support network. Either she's destitute (and if so, she did that to herself), or she's the stalker.
1
@cmdjk1 Women (particularly in America) are so poorly informed. They're not at all empowered to birth naturally and normally. They seem like crazy people... saying things like it's amazing someone can walk after birthing.
1
@randallhorlick4259 It's absolutely free, in all civilized countries.
1
The mother is a sociopath. This young girl didn't stand a chance of growing up normal.
