I can see a few issues like this. For one, I don't agree or "like" watering down all the vowel pronunciations to schwa. I pronounce pencil as "PĔN-sĭl". The word's spelling makes sense to me! Second, a single dot and a tittle are going to fight on the letter i. I noticed Rob showed two dots over the i for distinction, but then it looses its meaning (e.g. naïve). So, I don't think a dot would work.

@RobWords 0:30 Unbelievably cold? I don't want to hear it! It's currently –15°F (–26°C) where I am, and the wind chill has been –20-something to –36°F (–38°C) depending upon whom you ask. BIG cold spell hitting the USA right now! BRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!

@unpopular_theories Now, five months later, the tide has completely turned, of course... and it's hot and very humid outside.

When I was taught English back in my youth, we were taught "long" and "short" forms of all the vowels. Our teacher(s) wrote the long forms with a macron and short forms with a breve. It's stuck with me all these years later.
