@tunneloflight I must inform you that you have very little grasp of how the power grid works. Please research that and get back to us.

So what does the sign 3:05 on the gate that you're conveniently blocking 2:50 read? 😛

*Chornobyl

It's been my understanding that radon mitigation in homes is advised because radon flow can change over time. You may have a very tiny amount of radon flowing out of the ground beneath your home when you buy it. But, suddenly 20 years later, something shifts or gets worn down by water in the ground and a much more powerful plume of radon suddenly has access to your home. And you're none the wiser.

Radiation-ion based detectors are very sensitive to minute smoke particles. You don't want those near your kitchen or they'll nuisance alarm a lot. Modern photocell detectors "see" smoke in the air that refracts on large smoke particles from a LED. There is no radioactive source needed. These are more sensitive to smoldering and early fire stages, which makes them superior in my book.

6:55 Selenium is toxic in greater than trace quantities; but it has biological role and is a necessary mineral. Don't eat too many Brazil nuts in one sitting, either.

Cheaper isn't gonna happen. "Next generation" isn't gonna happen, either.

It's a lot longer than 9 years. Expect 50+ years.
1
@RadioactiveDrew I am pretty sure anything you tried to do with it to that end would compromise its containabilty.
1
@deephish Sure you are. Sure.
1
@RadioactiveDrew Of all the things wrong in the world, surely there are a few better things to rage about right now than how someone pronounces a word??
1
@krashd Because I don't care how he pronounces it, and he was the one being criticized.

It will be evaporated (water vapor is just that—water) and what's left behind will be treated as waste and packed away.

@RadioactiveDrew Get a lead box. Seriously.

A decommissioned plant is not the same as an active one.
1
The small nuclear power plant I grew up about a mile from was shut down in 2016 after operating since 1973. Its decommissioning is expected to last through 2058 (40+ years).

You should be wearing lead shielding handling that type of stuff. "They" say that Mrs. Curie did not die from her radium experimentation, but there really is no safe level of exposure to radiation of that nature.
1
@RadioactiveDrew That isn't what I mean. Background radiation is one thing, but we don't walk by artificially-proximate sources every day. I say "no safe dose" because risk (not certainty) of permanent tissues damage increases quickly with time. Mrs. Curie didn't know this, but we do. If it's not a big deal, why are you still slightly uncomfortable with it?
1
@wingracer1614 Yes, the risk of cellular damage (there are a few different types) increases as time of exposure lengthens or distance to exposure lessens. That doesn't mean that short exposures are safe. Each element is also unique in its radiation profile and contact risk factors. My point is that radium is higher on the danger list than many other elements. When you work or play around this stuff, it adds up. There are also studies that indicate more-intense damage is repaired by the body more-successfully than slower, less intense damage over time.

I'm sorry, but random letters do not describe English pronunciation. "e" alone can be pronounced about 5 different ways or not pronounced at all; don't get me started on "c". Either use smaller, well-known existing words, or a more-precise description. Capitalize the most-accented syllable. NEW-klee-ur or /NÛ·klē·ŭr/ If you want to be really anal-retentive, use the IPA. [ˈnu kli ər] or [ˈnyu kli ər] or even [ˈnu kyə lər]

“How do you bend electromagnetic radiation?” EM radiation "bends" (bounces) all the time. It depends on the type of radiation an the surface. Radio waves bounce around in the atmosphere without even a "surface."

There is no 5-second rule for food on the ground.

I think if I paid $2500 for a radiation measuring device, I'd never want to see OVERLOAD.
1
@RadioactiveDrew I was mostly joking, but it's still better to know the numbers when you're touching something like that.
1
More ammo for the evil of Monsanto. 😀
1
Chornobyl wasn't a one-thing-goes-wrong event, either. It was a comedy of errors.
1
That's actually not funny.

Numpties gonna nump.
