How do you win, if you can't invade your enemy? 2) In addition, the US had the same problem in the South (The Republic of Vietnam) fighting Communist farmers as they do today in Afghanistan. The enemy hides amongst the locals with no official uniform. So, killing all the rice farmers was not a solution. 3) The US fought many battles in the Jungle trying to kill all of the Vietnamese Communists, but after the Battle of Dak To 6,000 Vietnamese Communists fled to Laos and Cambodia where the USA could not fight them. 4) Americans fled to Canada and Mexico to avoid being forced in the army (The USA still has conscription laws). Americans attacked and killed US soldiers coming home from Vietnam. The USA had massive riots and protests. Buildings were burnt down. The US government could not stay in Vietnam and face civil unrest at home. The American people did not want to fight and die in Vietnam.
