  1. Sometimes, US vehicles and weapons are named after the year they're developed, like the B-52 bombers. Sometimes the number is sequential, involving prototypes and such, like the M1A1 and M1A2 Abrams tanks. And sometimes, the numbers are just there to avoid confusion. For example, the M3 Stuart was a light tank that was upgraded to a new version. The new version was called the M5 to simply avoid confusion with the M4 Sherman tank.
