Japanese sailor Noburo Kinoshita, after his November 1955 capture from the Luzon jungle, hanged himself rather than "return to Japan in defeat". Indeed, during WWII 7,000+ Japanese civilians jumped off a cliff to their deaths on the island of Saipan rather than be captured. They had been taught that the Americans were devils and that under their helmets they had horns. If captured they would be tortured by the Americans and rejected by their fellow Japanese for dishonoring the Emperor and the Empire of Japan. During WWII, Japanese women would sharpen bamboo sticks and charge American soldiers. When facing American tanks with no anti-tank guns, the Japanese would strap bombs to themselves and dive under the tanks. The fanaticism was very, very real.
