palmieres There maybe a huge role culture plays, but men being expected to hide emotion doesn't explain everything. One thing that sticks out to me is the cultural differences between Japan and the US. The Japanese have severely less violent culture, yet their suicide rate (especially among middle aged men) is among the highest in the world. It may be caused by societal expectations and pressures (combined other socio-economic issues) like finding a wife, starting a family and having a stable job. Here in the US, it's usually older men who commit suicide, men who may have suppressed emotions all their lives and/or find themselves all alone. Studies have found that men suffer from loneliness a lot more than women. In addition, there could be a natural psychological "breadwinner" mentality that leads to a feeling of hopelessness when unfulfilled.

I think there is more to it than that. The men to women suicide rate is humongous around the world.
