  3. The French were exploring the region and they met some natives so they named the area "Arkansas". The French don't pronounce the "S" on the end. Then years later, some English-speaking Americans were exploring an area to the west and met the same natives. They asked them what they were called. They said "Kansas" (pronounced Can-sis). So they named the area Kansas. Two states, different names and pronunciations, but named after the same native tribe. Also, Illinois is another native tribe that met the French before the English. The "S" in "Illinois" is silent.
