  1. The "Screaming Eagles" nickname comes from a Bald Eagle that served as a mascot for the 8th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment that fought in the American Civil War. He was named was Old Abe, after the US president Abraham Lincoln. He was carried into battle on specially designed perch alongside the US and Wisconsin flags! Confederate traitors liked to shoot at him and called him "that damn Yankee buzzard"! Old Abe survived the war and died years later in the Wisconsin capitol building! The 101st Division was stationed in Wisconsin shortly after World War 1 and they took their nickname in his honor! It was in 1942 that the 101st Infantry Division became the 101st Airborne Division! I'm from Wisconsin, so I'm pretty proud!
