  2. American generals did seriously think it was possible that the Soviets could invade Japan. It's part of what influenced the dropping the bombs. The US hadn't anticipated the Soviets would advance through Manchuria and Korea as quickly as they did. They worried that the Soviets would invade mainland Japan and we'd get another East vs West Germany.
