I think carriers will be expected to take on more diverse roles and smaller aircraft such as drones, helicopters and VTOL aircraft. They may even include missiles. They will not be just floating airfields, but they will become floating bases. They may even have their own Marine detachments with bays that open right into the water

Carriers are still projections of national power. You can deploy aircraft anywhere in international water. It's just that as of late, Russia and China have more defensive stances. Russia has no need to really project power across the sea. And any serious naval invasion or fleet will be dealt with by a barrage of anti-ship missiles. China needs to project power over the South China Sea and Indian Ocean to protect it's Asian influence and trade routes. Unlike the islands they're building, carriers can move anywhere and launch aircraft anywhere within those seas

I assure you, actual generals want to win wars. They don't care if they look good in movies. American generals are not North Korean or Chinese generals

The oceans are still too big. Fleets will become more like floating bases that can attack/defend shipping lanes. And especially support naval invasions. Fleets and ships will be built to take on drones, and aircraft more and more

As if China will follow any restrictions out on aircraft carriers. Both the US and China would veto any UN resolution to restrict carriers

Not really

Actually the US use of carriers after WWII comes from an aggressive battle doctrine. The US wants to project power over the seas. The Soviets never wanted too. They adopted a defensive doctrine, with the plan of shooting any invading force with anti-ship missiles. They had no plans for naval invasions

I disagree
