  1. the PKK and Kurdish government is 2 different groups. The Kurdish government is an antonymous region in Iraq (basically a province of Iraq with a little more self-governing power than other provinces). The Kurdish government has a strong tradition of a local militia called the Peshmerga and YPG. The PKK is a Kurdish socialist (sometimes called communist) political party that lives in Turkey. Turkey often tries to suppress them and the PKK often gets in open conflict with them (like with machine guns and rocket launchers). The U.S. calls the PKK terrorists because Turkey is an important ally in the region. But the U.S. also supports Iraqi Kurdistan because they have proven to be more stable than the Iraqi government and because Iraqi Kurdistan is rather peaceful compared to the PKK and other groups in the middle east. The PKK and Iraqi Kurdistan don't always exactly see eye-to-eye, but they tolerate each other. Turkey see Iraqi Kurdistan and the PKK as the same thing. They don't like Kurds at all because many Kurds live in southeastern Turkey and many of these Kurds want independence from Turkey.
