Sadly, it didn't matter in the end if Grant had ordered the entire Army of Northern Virginia executed or not. The South was bitter and hateful. He treated them with honor and humility. They responded by ruining his reputation and lying about the war. Treating the enemy with respect is not always the right answer. They should've all been hung as traitors.
