@grahamleadbeatter5981 It was about volume of fire because guns were so inaccurate and the process of standing and shooting didn't last long. Most battles ended in a bayonet charge. The idea was shoot and kill as much of the enemy as possible and then break their will to fight with a bayonet charge. Even until the 1800's most soldiers weren't issued more than 20-30 bullets because like I said, the goal was to break the enemies will to fight and force them off the battlefield. Eventually they did start adopting units like Jagers which went ahead of the main force and skirmished with the enemy by firing at them from behind trees, rocks and in the grass
