  1. Sanctions are nothing new and are actually a pretty effective tool without open conflict. In 1940, France fell to Nazi German invasion. This left their colony, French Indochina (Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam today) virtually undefended. The Japanese Empire invaded French Indochina that months after the French government capitulated to the Germans in Europe. In response to this invasion, the USA embargoed sales of oil to Japan and froze all of Japan's assets in the USA. With nowhere to get oil to fuel the Imperial Japanese military, Japan was faced with a choice: seize oil by conquest, or abandon it's conquest of Indochina. We all know the choice the Japanese Empire made, but they ended up losing the war to a country with 10x the economic power. Putin is in a similar position right now: seize the resources he needs by force or give u on the war in Ukraine
