  1. Of course, I always cheer for my home country, the USA, I understand Germany wanting to go with something else. I was surprised by Sweden's Gripen being so popular. Typically Sweden produces indigenous vehicles for only itself, but the Gripen has been made particularly for the export market. The Gripen is a cheap, yet very capable and modern aircraft and no doubt a good choice for air forces that are unlikely to see any major combat. Which is why I can see the German Air Force leaning towards it because there have recently been questions as to whether Germany even needs an Air Force. I know that the War in Afghanistan and NATO have become less popular in Germany recently. Although, I could also see a major political push towards a more unified EU in regards to military matters. Since the UK left, France and Germany have very much taken up the torch, so to speak, of leading the EU. For this reason, adopting the Rafale maybe more favorable. The Rafale is as famous and as capable as the F-16, but as far as I know, it's kinda dated. I wonder why Germany and France wouldn't want to work together on a new modern joint multi-role fighter? With the recent strengthening of a European border force, I can see the EU focusing on creating a multi-national military force just for the EU within the next few decades. It would make NATO obsolete and also allow EU members better inter-operability in exercises and conflict. A common EU fighter aircraft would greatly help this. Although there could also be a role geopolitics could be playing as well. The USA would not be eager to see anything that would undermine NATO. Despite what some Americans think of NATO, the USA doubtlessly benefits from it. In the same sense, NATO is still growing and many nations that have become part of NATO see it as a benefit, whereas they would be reluctant to join an EU inter-national military because they would be afraid of their forces being controlled by more powerful nations or even regional rivals. The political sway that non-European members bring to NATO along with the decentralized command of NATO is more attractive. But, I'm getting off topic. I think Germany will pick the Gripen or even look to develop a new fighter jointly with France. I don't think the Rafale would be the best choice.
