  1. The Liberation of France, the Warsaw Uprising and the Liberation of Italy during WWII are two successful examples I can think of a population rising up to aid the invaders. Also, another example of invaders thinking they would be welcomed as liberators and failing would be the Confederate invasion of Kentucky during the US Civil War. A Confederate general (his name escapes me) took wagons of 20,000 rifles with him into Kentucky where the CSA thought there would be scores of Southern Sympathizers. The Confederate general complained that after 3 weeks of wandering the state, he couldn't find one person willing to take up arms to fight against the Union.
