  1. Because in 2013, the pro-Russian government was ousted in a popular uprising called Euromaidan. The new government sought to join the EU and NATO. Then in 2014, huge natural gas fields were discovered in the Donbass and off the coast of Crimea. Ukraine could've sold this to the EU and make them less dependent on Russian natural gas, so Russia invaded Crimea and sent weapons and soldiers to start a rebellion in the Donbass.
