  1. Actually individuals CAN declare bankruptcy, Chapter 7 is full discharge and Chapter 13 means you partially repay your debts. BUT student loans aren’t dischargeable except in a few circumstances like permanent disability, so eventually you will have to pay them back. And the bankruptcy stays on your credit record I think for 10 years, making it difficult or impossible to get credit and in some cases to even rent an apartment or get a job. No such thing as debtor’s prison.
