I remember my dad doing the same thing for us kids when we were backpacking a trail and came across three adolescent bears. He hustled us in five directions as those rogue males tried to find us. Finally he took us to the nearby ranch road where we hiked a half mile before he felt comfortable enough to take us back on the trail. A few days later a sow with two big cubs had us do another big circumvent. Unforgettable trip!
