And how much do they weigh?
8
It's straight-6, not V6.
3
@UltimateFatMan - this is why I needed to ask that question. Weight can often be the enemy affecting handling, something that the 86/BRZ and Miata would not have much of a problem. Edit: Forgot to add the obligatory "thanks".
3
@roocrew86 - sweet. This is a well-maintained machine.

Here's the thing; - 'JDM' refers to cars built to the Japanese market and its regulations. The GT-R, since it's built for the North American market, IS NOT 'JDM'. - if the current Supa is just a "rebadged Z4", the driving dynamics would have been different. Besides, BMW wasn't even planning to continue with the car after its last generation.
2
The other 2 are rear wheel drive.

Until you dig deeper into the A80's history... . . . . . . SPOILER: It was also hated back when it was new. We already saw a repeat with the current car, yet it's handling it very well.

Few things: the most important of which is to keep the tradition of using a straight-6 engine like the previous Supras. On the "Z4 look", take a look at Toyota's own 2000GT. The current Supra has a ton of references to that car.
1
@AE86FTS - on the Nürburgring time, sport auto did 8:01 using a stock Type R. In comparison, the one that did 7:43 was modified by the manufacturer, even using stickier tires.
1
Toyota was looking for a straight-6 engine. BMW has more experience in making that configuration, so Toyota turned to them. Then, they extensively checked and redesigned the engine to meet their quality standards.

The LF-A isn't really a successor to the Supra in any way, other than two doors.
1
"A sports car would be disastrous if powered by hybrid technology." - not quite. Repair costs aside, at the very least, you can still keep the sound of petrol burning when you have the free time and a track day at an available race circuit, all while keeping some of the neighbors happy. After all, there are some hybrid race cars that are still powered with the dino juice (or biofuel if available and suitable).
1
@Thankyou_3 - that's not it.
1
The Supra never competed with the GT-R in terms of sales. That happened in racing.
1
6.1 secs for the manual. Besides, good chance that the 0-60 could be lower than stated.
1
The early JGTC Supra race cars use 4-cylinders.
1
I mean, do they really need to?
1
"Small design" - yeah, about that, might wanna read the measurements comparison. https://www.supramkv.com/threads/toyota-supra-size-dimensions-comparison-thread.1634/

The Supra was never, EVER designed to compete with either the GT-R or NSX. Up until the A90, the Supra's main target was the Nissan Z cars. Funnily enough, the GT-R and NSX are two different vehicles (one's a successor to a homologation special, and the other was meant to rival Ferrari's less expensive offerings at the time, specifcally the 348). I'll leave a link here. https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/threads/toyota-supra-a90.235133/page-41 EDIT: Oh, and the Supra we mainly know and love? It's a grand tourer - less of a sports car.

@donaldtrumptard2759 - I'll just leave this here... https://www.goodcarbadcar.net/toyota-supra-sales-figures/

7:05. He even states the reasons there.
1
Nope. And MR2 stands for 'Midship, Runabout, 2-seater' to denote the cars mid-engined characteristics.

Not really.

@doctorlarry2273 - handling. Not always top speed.
