As savagegeese puts it during his first review of the Supra: using a mass-produced, existing platform for a sports car come with trade-offs. Even though the platform used by both the current Supra and Z4 features elements of BMW's CLAR, it's a dedicated, more purpose-built one.

"also no way this would make 1000hps that easy like the 2JZ" - keep in mind that the JZ was developed at time that emissions regulations were a bit more relaxed compared to now. The B58, in contrast, had to make do with the regs in place - and considering the number of high-horsepower builds that popped up, it's still pretty remarkable that it got to the 1000 hp mark somewhat quickly.
