@christopherdavis7287 - conveniently forgetting that there are a bunch of others Supras without the 2JZ - or the 1JZ for that matter, which only appeared in some A70 models
20
And yet, that "embarrassment" did pretty well on the motorsport side of things.
3
And yet, that "deplorable hybrid" is actually much more capable on both the road and the track than what many people anticipated.
3
"Toyota let down their fans with this bmw." - not quite, especially considering the sales of the A80 model (at least in the U.S.). Besides, not a lot of people are buying Lexus' two-door offerings and tuning them.
2
@VNCTHE1 - "That's because they don't hold the "supra" name" - not quite. The reason why I brought up the sales of the A80 is that fans can have quite the rose-tinted glasses. Few who were alive at that time actually remember just how not so rosy the car was doing in comparison to the preceeding A70 (which sold a lot more). I fear that a good number of people are repeating the mistakes that doomed the previous car.
2
@VNCTHE1 - "Are you trying to argue that it sells better as a BMW than if Toyota actually made it?" - actually, no. Quite far from it.
2
"BMW made the car. toyota just badge it." - not quite. Besides, an actual rebadge would have meant compromised driving dynamics.
2
"Toyota should be ashamed putting their name on a BMW product." - not quite, especially considering how many A80 Supras were sold new in the U.S.
2
They specifically asked for a straight-6 engine.
2
@GS-zc4sk - afraid that ain't enough dynamics-wise. Besides the "Zupra" did a lot more to inject performance than those using the New N and TNGA platforms.
2
Rebadged? No. If it were a rebadge, the driving dynamics would have been different. Besides, BMW wasn't even planning on making the Z4 due to less-than-ideal sales of the E89 generation until Toyota came in with the idea of developing both the Supra and Z4 together.
2
Germany's sport auto would like a word (even if the engine's still the 335 hp version).
2
Nissan GT-R's automatic, Corvette's automatic
2
@georgecupac1202 - and yet, why are people still getting manly points for buying?
2
"The new Supra is a complete failure." - the sales of the A80 say otherwise.
2
Not quite. Besides, the sales of the A80 tell a different story - and helps explain why Toyota went with BMW for the current Supra.
2
"Toyota was stupid for doing this" - not quite. Besides, the sales of the A80 say otherwise - same for the current Lexus coupe offerings.
2
"Stain on the Toyota brand." - not quite considering the situation the A80 had to face back when it was sold new.
2
@thesaxster - since 2019, they sold 24,428 in the U.S. market alone.
2
"Biggest flop Toyota ever did" - it's actually the A80 model that sold worse (the current car is double in sales U.S.-wise).
2
@thesupralegacy - "It doesn't have the expected sale numbers." - not quite. By conservative metrics, it actually served Toyota pretty well considering the number of crises it faced (from pandemics to parts shortages). Not to mention that it have quite an extensive racing career.
2
@thesupralegacy - not to be rude, but a lot of people seem to suffer from rose-tinted glasses without realizing just how bad the situation was for the A80.
2
@thesupralegacy - "The new aka mk5 is a rebadged Z4 either we like it or not!" - which is false, BTW. It would have meant a compromised driving dynamic that doesn't give Toyota the desired performance. Besides, BMW wasn't even on making the Z4 after the dismal sales of the last-gen car.
2
@thesupralegacy - "so you feel comfortable when a Toyota Suprawannabe mk5 gets a recall and has to attend a BMW dealership!" - you do know that there are also several Toyota cars that got the recalls, right? Besides, some users here mentioned that a very good and well-versed independent shop can help with the maintenance... and for a bit cheap compared to a dealer. "No matter what, the mk5 is a bad trans gender creation with identity crisis." - nope, and you know that. "and finally the miserable BMW Zupra will go away." - is it? Of course, there is the rumored end of production, I admit. But the impact of the Zupra is already long-lasting - especially for those who have been keeping an eye on the car's development for a long while... long before it even hit the dealers back in 2019.
2
"Why ruin the Supra name" - the sales of the A80 say otherwise.
2
A "transgender" with more racing credentials than you expected, especially with the original engine being used.
2
@Nismo1983 - dude, you might want to look at your comment again, 'cuz you're mixing up two engine series of different configurations. Besides, I'm suspecting you're underestimating just how capable the B58 is.
2
The sales of the A80 tell a different story.
2
@1FiftyOverland - "um....... Toyota.......built......parts." - I think you're forgetting who made the transmission for the A80 Supra.
2
The sales of the A80 and Lexus' coupe offering say otherwise.
2
@erniejoel1234 - "Toyota only made some adjustments here and there and nothing else." - not quite, actually.
2
"the car is a looser" - total sales so far for the current Supra (in terms of the U.S. market) sits at 24,428. That's more than double the A80 model's.
2
Not quite the whole story.
2
Not quite the whole story. To say that manufacturers should be ashamed (while indeed important) can miss a lot of important contexts.
2
@fs5866 - "the car itself looks waaaay too similar to a BMW z4." - I suggest comparing the Supra to the 60's-era 2000GT.
2
@fs5866 - not quite. Look at the two cars closely - the current Supra borrows a good chunk of design cues from the 2000GT... and not from the Z4.
2
I suggest driving it on a twisty road or local race track.
