Because Toyota needed a straight-6 engine for the Supra (outside the Japan-exclusive 4-banger). They can't just use the 2JZ because it would have been expensive to make it compliant with today's emissions regulations, and it's heavy. Oh, and Toyota was reported to have a great hand in the development of the B58 engine.

And how much is the NSX again?
2
Two if you count the Mark 3. Four if you count the Celica-based models (Marks 1 and 2).

@alexanderdanielsson6049 - I suggest getting in touch with someone who owns one. They ain't exactly slow, and besides, it ain't about speed (especially since trying to make use of the horsepower on a public road is very tricky).

The Supra was never inteded to compete with the GT-R. It's mainly the Z cars.
1
@prestog610 - a direct competitor it was not. https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/threads/toyota-supra-a90.235133/page-41 "That big group of 90s Japanese cars is only really considered rivals due to them having the same power outputs. In reality the Supra has always been more of a GT than a sports car (high performance but heavy and not that sharp to drive), like the 300ZX. The NSX and RX-7 have always struck me more as being the sports cars, while the R35 shows the direction Nissan probably would have gone even earlier were it not for the gentleman's agreement nominally limiting them to 280PS."

It wasn't competing with the GT-R in sales. It was mainly the Z cars.

Chassis and engine development, suspension tuning... Both BMW and Toyota created a purpose-built platform so that their desired cars could be built. Oh, and the Supra has been racing since last 2018, so Toyota have a good amount of data for the refining of their own product.
1
The GT-R was not the real rival of the Supra. The Z was.
1
Not the whole story. The AE86 is popular for racing even before Initial D was a thing. BTW, it's also originally a manga.
1
Yet, German anti-trust laws prevent a rebadge from happening. This isn't exactly a rebadge.
1
So I suppose that the 1st to 3rd generations of the "Supra" are not to be called "Supra" because they don't have the 2JZ engine?
1
The Supra and GT-R weren't supposed to be competing with each other.

@MegaEvoluzione - I was addressing one sentence: "The R34 and the Supra Mk4 were evenly matched..."

It's real.

@jammiedodger7040 - tell that to the number of people who lost their livelihood, their houses, and often their lives due to heatwaves, frequent storms, among others.
1
@jammiedodger7040 - unfortunately, it does.
1
@jammiedodger7040 - there is an effect. I mean, why are the heatwaves more frequent.
1
@jammiedodger7040 - not me, it's you.

BMW still makes straight-6s. Mercedes' return to the engine configuration is a bit too recent.
1
Because they don't have a suitable straight-6 engine to use (you cannot use the 2JZ due to its heavy weight and reworking it would be expensive, more so for just one car). Plus, you need more models designed to accept the engine, which by the looks of it, not a priority. https://carbuzz.com/news/a-toyota-powered-supra-would-have-cost-over-100000
1
@lexzenis2544 - I suggest getting in touch with someone who owns it and take a drive with it. The car is not meant for outright speed.
1
Both the Z4 and Supra use twin-scroll, a type of single turbo design.
1
There's a reason why Toyota and Subaru picked natural aspiration over forced induction. What other car aside from the Miata offer this kind of experience at their price range?
1
Because they are looking for a straight-6 engine, more specifically. They cannot use the 2JZ due to its heavy weight and cost in reworking the thing for today's regulations.
