  1. "The US jets needed 17, and a swept runway. In other words the US jets would need a carrier." - you do know that the angled flight deck is the standard for bigger aircraft carriers, right? The French do it, the Chinese do it, even Russia's only yet broken carrier has it. The exception would be for those that handle STOVL jets.
