why aren't all carrier aircraft VTOL? we have fly by wire good enough to do tailsitter jets these days. And midair refuelling means that you can top off your fuel once airborne from something like a MQ-25 tanker drone so the fuel consumption issues with VTOL won't turn into range issues. no more arresting wires!

@ Zbychoslaw666 so you extend the range by refuelling as soon as you take off, you eliminate the compromises to airframe and ergonomics with a self-landing tailsitter design. Those were my second and third sentences in my comment, if you bothered to click “read more”. Also if you have a full sized carrier, you could potentially safely launch the entire alpha strike at once with vtol rather than wait in a queue for a catapult. When the arresting wire broke, the pilot and WSO of this hornet ejected also, so you have the same situation in a F18 on a bad landing as you do with VTOL.

@ zbychoslaw666 we already have tailsitting naval drones like Northrop Grumman’s new Tern. The secret was to remove the pilot from the equation. Also make the ejection seat rails rotate during landing to point towards the nose. That was a common feature in all 1950s tailsitter designs, that way you eject clean through the breakaway nose (avoiding the radar) in the event of an accident.

@ ChucksSEADnDEAD that’s because the F-35B is designed to vector the engines, not rotate the pilot. The Grumman Tern drone shows that Naval Tailsitters can be done.
