They’re more than meets the eye

Imagine if we were reverse engineering the Roswell crash for 80 years and it is finally revealed that it was a 40ft long all titanium short range scout powered by hydrocarbon fuelled turbojet engines, and equipped with lasers, a Pentium dual core CPU and a microwave oven for warming up lunch.
17
Yeah, loyal wingman drones. I think I saw a Jamie Foxx movie called "Stealth" about one of the drones becoming self aware.
11
Call of Duty: Advanced Tug of War

@MrNicoJac The F-117 nighthawk had a switch to suck in all the antennas, close the FLIR doors and generally reduce the signature of the aircraft for the best stealth available in 1991. The pilots called it "the klingon cloaking device."
7
Can you imagine trying to spend 10 hours a day in a forward deployed "clean room" trying to repair broken laser weapons? cleaning air-filters would be soul-destroying.
3
0:15 wait, where is the video from last week about reducing the F-16's radar cross section? I only see a video from two weeks ago about F-16s in ukraine?
3
did they call the boeing team “phantom works”? they’re a little sensitive about their identity
3
@PrezVeto giant honking laser blimp, covered with 100mw laser emitters on a 50% duty cycle. to look upon the aircraft is certain death.
3
The crime is not that we are capturing alien wreckage, the crime is that we are not sharing it.
3
Any high altitude jet can achieve mach 3, once.
2
Well something is keeping the skies clear over ukraine. If it isn't s300/s400 and the ghost of kiev is just a ghost, then what is making the environment so lethal?
2
Needs more tactical airborne laser weapon system, and microwave/rf directed energy weapon system.
2
It's like the martial arts master who challenges you to hit him while he will only dodge.
2
@Gxaps you can get 2d. The f35b needs it for landing vertically. 2d is almost 3d!
2
Well if i'm in a 4th gen legacy fighter or if i was a drone, I'd want a missile with a bigger motor so I could stay further away
2
@sadlerbw9 heinlein had the moon as the ultimate high ground in "the moon is a harsh mistress"
2
@ericvosselmans5657 i bet they could achieve similar power densities with High Temperature Fission (the helium cooled reactor design that the Japanese like)
2
The great thing is the engines are always horizontal, so they aren't going to leak oil and leave "cigarette burns" on the flightline like the Osprey does.
2
Welcome to the Imperial Guard, here is your helmet, flak armour and lasgun. The Emperor Protects!
2
The bulge is for the satellite dish. They always reminded me of dildos because of how hard they unalive anyone on the ground.
2
3:52 is when we get to the modern era
1
2:50 one of the conspiracy theories was that Columbia was sent to grab the film can of a Russian spy satellite, but the film can turned out to be a bomb.
1
Hey how good is the range amd resolution on modern LIDAR?
1
The last time Letters of Marque and Reprise were issued was during the Hunt for Osama Bin Laden.
1
9:40 the hitman was told to make it "look like an accident" so the hitman yelled "Oopsies!" everytime he pulled the trigger
1
Reactor Online. Sensors Online. Weapons Online. All Systems Nominal.
1
The most disturbing thing about an optionally manned nuclear armed bomber is the autonomous global strike. Is it capable of operating in DEAD HAND mode?
1
Nah, I bet this is just declassifying production after 20 years of killing badguys
1
Wait, do they recirculate their empty shells to the magazine or do they just eject them?
1
All sword, no shield.
1
With friends like that who needs AI?
1
On time and under budget? Bullshit. If it is going this well it can only mean the program was started when the JSF was awarded and secretly has been bombing America's frenemies for the last 15 years. Feels good to finally get some credit right?
1
@pogo1140 "Lead, follow or get out of the way!" - the Drone, probably.
1
Now THIS is airpower
1
8:30 what if the combustion and compression does not take place inside the aircraft?
1
Grumman bailed out on competing in this competition to do something more important 🤔
1
Conspiracy theorists have been seeing these in the sky since the Clinton years.
1
Are they saying the stock F-35 is a Fiat?
1
Object was about the size of a car, so does that mean it had no visible payload?
1
Shol'va! To all those who would turn against their god, know this! For your insolence, you will die in the cold of space. What is rightfully mine will now return to me!
1
6:20 i can't believe that f35 didn't install the f35b nozzle on all variants. Why wouldn't you put in the 2d thrust vectoring that is inescapably required for STOVL?
1
@ChucksSEADnDEAD then make a 2d thrust vectoring nozzle that you can use at speed. There is clearly space to install one.
1
AGM-183 flew in an exercise near Guam this week
1
Do we have hypersonic drones yet? They seem like the logical first thing to do ahead of putting people on a hypersonic aircraft.
1
holy shit one day you could meaningfully ask a pilot what their K/D ratio is
1
there is something else in the skies above kiev, it is not a ghost but it is invisible and it scares the shit out of me.
1
F35 isn't special because of stealth. F35 is special because of the conformal laser weapon system that the J20 friggin stole.
1
I thought we were going to build loyal wingman drones to offset the Chinese abundance of pilots
1
I wonder how roomy the cockpit on an optionally manned bomber is? Can you lay down? Sleep? Shit in a proper toilet and heat up hot rations? Imagine being on duty orbiting a failsafe point in the arctic - on your south side you pick up fuel from a tanker and on the north side you watch the horizon where your enemies sleep. It it all goes bad either you slowly fly in for a second strike and avenge america, or the onboard AI systems will fly the mission carrying your irradiated corpse in the pilot and copilot seat.
