  1. In the 1938 future australian prime minister Robert Menzies forced the export of iron to Japan. Japan was using the iron to make war materiel for their undeclared war in China, with the Rape of Nanking occurring only one year prior. When the dockworkers refused to load pig iron onto the Steam Ship Dalfram headed to Japan, Menzies used his powers as the Attorney General to end the strike and accused the dock workers of using industrial action to dictate foreign policy, thus earning himself the nickname "Pig Iron Bob." The Imperial Japanese were kind enough to return the pig iron to Darwin by air, in the form of bomb casings, free of charge.
