  1. I blame G. H. Hardy who wrote "No mathematician should ever allow himself to forget that mathematics, more than any other art or science, is a young man's game." I take that to mean that the demands of pushing the field forward towards new theorems and discoveries is incredibly taxing - requiring creativity, fluid intelligence, mathematical intuition and of course a rigorous understanding of the absolute mountain of mathematics that has come before us. We might have reached the point that by the time you reach the bleeding edge of mathematics, things like the demands of family life and gradual loss of mental flexibility make it harder to do anything new. We might need to delegate mathematical discovery to automated theorem provers and artificial intelligence, taking a stochastic approach to mathematics - we get the computer to try literally everything and then determine what worked for us, and then we gather the fruits of its results.
