  1. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion_Capital_of_Ashoka Yes the original lions were roaring the message of Dharma but after Independence they were "tamed" to such an extent that in some instances the mouths were shut - like the case of the emblem atop the karnataka state assembly. Even in the official national emblem, the mouths of the two lions on either side can be seen roaring or baring their fangs while the one in the middle is tamely "smiling". The new national emblem stays true to both the ideals and the design of the original sculpture and is free of the distortions introduced after independence.
