I just posted something similar. It's like she wanted a huge payback towards Richard, her mum, society and this is how she felt like she could get it. She just needed help to deal with it, and not forgive Richard, but learn how to move on from it. I'm not saying that's easy but there is a LOT of help out there. I'm honestly not surprised she took comfort in this "cult" so quickly.

Miranda is always desperately seeking the attention she never got as a child. She was neglected and suffered unbelievable sexual trauma as a child. Not excusing what she did, or saying she should be released to do it again, but that should be considered, and she should definitely be receiving the therapy and medication she needs. I think a large part of the tragedy here was she killed that man as a way of getting at her uncle, the whole "you being 16 doesn't matter". She just wanted to feel like she'd "evened up the score" and got all that anger and hatred out of her. It's really sad.
