I remember when I was in middle school, back in the 90s, everyone was wearing massive jeans with giant wallet chains lol. Why? Because everyone was. That's the only reason.

Also the massive Pacific Palisades reservoir that was empty, that was a FEDERAL call. Let me explain. When built that reservoir was in compliance with all EPA laws. In the 2000s the limits on disinfection byproducts were lowered, and this reservoir using free chlorine could no longer meet them, so they switched to chloramine disinfection. This required a 5 year upgrade program to retrofit a cover to the reservoir because sunlight destroys chloramine and won't disinfect adequately. This cover was discovered to have tears in 2023-ish that required it to be removed to repair, a year+ project. While uncovered it could not produce legal drinking water per EPA. That's why it was empty, to comply with FEDERAL regulations. That's not an excuse, that's an explanation.

I think such tokens of reminder and remembrance are far more common among people of all cultures and societies than they are rare or odd. Keychains, rabbits feed, tattoos, chains, piercings, headcoverings, even certain clothing, all serve the same purpose: to provide meaning in a seemingly meaningless world.

I'm not religious but I wear a necklace chain as a similar token, throughout the day I'm reminded by stainless steel on my neck to be restrained, keep yourself chained in, be deliberate. It's like I've heard about a yarmulke or similar hat/head covering, it keeps you looking up and reminds you there is something ABOVE you, no matter how good YOU think you are.
