It seems like somewhere along the way, in the Star Trek example, that they lost the idea that The Enterprise is the Federation's Flagship, THE front-line vessel, the most prestigious posting in the entire galactic fleet. Only the best of the best of the best were selected for service on the Enterprise and the competition for positions was intense. That would mean that when writing a part for a crew member of that vessel, however you portray them reflects on the rest of the entire world you're building. If they're useless and incompetent, you're telegraphing that in your canon this massive paramilitary apparatus of many worlds and countless people working together towards this overarching goal of space exploration can't find anyone better than the incompetent character to serve that role AND they're the best they have out of their giant talent pool. In well-written Star Trek, they have flawed characters, BUT despite their flaws they're also there because for the most part they're exceedingly qualified for their job. People can relate because we've all probably worked with someone like that. "That guy over in engineering, I don't really like him, he's kind of an asshole, when we clock out he can f-off away from me...BUT he IS the best, most qualified person I know to work on (noun). He's the only person I'd trust with that. Just because I might allegedly think he's a piece of shit as a person doesn't mean he's not great at this job." But when you write a character with bad personal character AND incompetence in their specialty or role, you start asking "why are they here?".

  8. The part like that which struck me was when everything went public, and they're discussing evacuations. No, everything here is fine, BUT meanwhile in Germany, a thousand miles away, they're not letting children leave the house because the measured radiation is too dangerous, a thousand miles downwind...but I'm sure everything HERE, not 1000 miles away, is just fine.

The Asgardian warrior left on Earth from the long past that decided to live as a human and blend in as a meek nobody...but when they outed him he snapped his police handcuffs off like they were tissue paper, and Coulson or Ward try to stab him, only for him to grab the knife blade with his bare hand, squeeze, and you see the steel of the knife extrude out between his fingers like you or I squeezed cream cheese, it was a fast and subtle way of showing even this nobody, semi-aged, foot soldier former-Berserker Asgardian was orders of magnitude stronger than any human.

Social media is the perfect vehicle for the tactics a nazi propagandist would have learned in that period, which btw we in the US invented, through Edward Bernays. For example, Bernays is why you eat bacon and eggs for breakfast, he invented that under the employ of farm unions in the 20s to drive up the price/demand for chickens and hogs.

Terry was a dogshit Batman stand-in for like half the show, it took him a LONG time, experience, and constant mentoring in real time by Elderly Bruce just to survive most of the time. There were 5 MILLION Cybermen and the 4 Daleks considered 1 Dalek all they'd need against that number. As they said, this is not war, this is pest control. Cybermen are superior in only one aspect: dying. As a little boy I didn't like that. BUT Disney fixed that here, lol. They diversified the cast to add lost girl boys, meaning they now establish by accident that little girls are in face just as stupid that they fall out of prams, get lost, and are taken to neverland. They succeeded through their failure, somehow.

  40. 8:40 this is a big plot hole in many stories: the earth is not special or particularly abundant in natural resources on a spacefaring scale. Any race that came to earth to plunder our stuff, iron, gold, water, and so on, would have to pass dozens of larger, abundant, FREE sources in space on the way here. It's like driving past the corner gas station and getting on the interstate to the grocery store when all you want is a bottle of soda. You can do it, but why go so far out of your way when you don't need to? The Halo franchise actually used the reverse of this plot hole to determine The Covenant's intent to invade and destroy Earth to kill off and cripple humanity: a line of dialogue states they passed a dozen occupied, better planets on the way to earth once they learned its location.

I'd argue that's backwards: JON SNOW is the Gary Stu here, the secret heir to the throne that just happens to be the best fighter we know from the start of the show, who never loses, even when he DIES. By contrast, Arya has zero skills starting out, loses everything, starts over deciding to get revenge, and gains the skills she has over years of work and even torment, such as being blinded and abandoned, stabbed near to death, and having to kill countless people on her path to getting back anything she's lost. I hate the SJW/Metoo/identity politics bullshit as well, but I think too much of that is being read into this episode.

Honestly I think a great idea for a Terminator film plot would be a nanomachine enhanced human supersoldier from like 500 years AFTER the defeat of the machines returning to the past to prevent Judgement Day, and is successful because they have technology so far advanced than old humans or even the machines that they're both laughably weak enemies. That could be entertaining, almost like Terminator meets Doctor Who lol.

  55. As someone who straddles that line between 'eras', born in 1983 and had 9/11 happen to start my senior year of HS, it's weird. I'm not quite a very young Xer or a eldrly Millennial. I grew up playing outside and having cell phones and the internet. I remember being a kid and life being yes, a bit boring, then the promise of the new millennium, immediately snuffed by hey now all these people hate and want to kill you because reasons and we're forever at war. I'd take the boring pre-9/11 days back for sure. The anxiety of boredom is great and preferable once you've experienced the anxiety of FEAR, of terror.

  56. I read a review before I saw Northman in the theater, and its said 'It's Hamlet with Vikings", and I'm like I'M IN. I've never been so amped in a theater than in the Berserker scene around the campfire before that long single take raid. I wanted to start a fight with someone nearby for no reason lol. Great film. Beautifully shot, historically compelling. It's a tragedy it's not doing well at the box office.

  66. With all the criticism of the liquid metal antagonist, the T Juan Thousand, here I'm starting to think people actually HAVE forgotten T2. The T-1000 and up models are infiltration units, they're DESIGNED TO BE BLAND, to NOT stand out, to NOT draw attention to themselves in any way, unlike the T-800s that were obvious with their size and behavior. The most menacing, dangerous villain is the one you never see coming until it's too late.
