@stevenbenson9976 biggest problem with that: State and Local governments cannot print money, and many of them by law or Constitutional amendment require a balanced budget. That means if state revenues drop by, say, 50%, then the state budget also drops by that much, meaning what the state can do for it's citizens also drops by that much. News just came out that here in Missouri where I live, with a total population infection rate of 0.000 nothing percent, our state tax revenues dropped 56% last month. In a system that never has enough funding anyway, cut it by half and see the chaos.

A nationwide quarantine is sustainable, it's just the millions upon millions of deaths it would cause that are the problem. Civil unrest and crime alone from such a disruptive event would kill more than the virus. We're seeing people shoot McDonald's workers over quarantine rules and push cops in lakes. Commercial burglary is up almost 100% in places, and when that spreads to some areas countless people will get gunned down in such activity. The desperation a lockdown creates then feeds leads to disaster, especially here in the established first world, where for lots of people their idea of adversity is traffic making them spend too much time in their Escalade or Mercedes, Starbucks not getting their foam right, or the internet being out a whole hour.

Here's another personal example: I'm great friends with my work supervisor outside of work. We do charity events together, I've gone on vacation with him and his family, and we're like 5th cousins or something. He's known my family since his dad was a kid. You'd think that would mean I get to skate on anything I do wrong, right? WRONG. WRONG. The fact I know my boss so well means MORE is expected of me, that he knows I know what I should and should not be doing, and if I was to grievously fuck up at work, it wouldn't just be a "Oh, this bad employee screwed up", it would be more like "Why are you disappointing me like this, I expected more from you, I know you can do better". Also makes it hard to skip out for a sick day if I'm not actually sick, because I have to avoid anywhere I might be spotted lol. Not that I get days off. It's far easier to care a lot less about a job when you work for a stranger. I also put more into this job because I work for someone I know and respect. It's hard to have that "I can't let them down" attitude for a stranger, and I'd bet that drive is even stronger when it's a job with your own last name in it.

What you just described is how life has always been. It's always been crazy wilding out mofos and then reasonable people like me trying to live life carrying legally telling people to get away and stay off my lawn lol. Living in St Louis was EXACTLY like that. I carried a gun to do my laundry even in a gated community, as in the time I lived there a neighbor got carjacked and another was literally thrown over a fence into a backyard and raped. And I'm 5'9" 250lbs, but you have to be prepared. Virus or no virus.
