I'll always remember in high school marching band, at a competition standing at attention for a parade for HOURS, watching people in my section and the section in front of me pass out and faceplant on the concrete, and think "That's why you bend your knees now and then, don't keep them locked, you gotta try harder!"
We were the best in our region and earned shelves of trophies the two years of Jr High and 3 years of high school I did it, including a season as lead drum major my Junior year. I played clarinet and tenor sax, and snare drum to fill in if needed, and it was VERY character building...now at almost 42 years old, I still hear the drumline marching cadence blasting in my ears when I need motivation, we had an awesome one, heavy on the bass drums, you could hear in a parade echoing down the street for blocks.
I also did basketball pep band, and some all-conference ensemble and solo, and concert jazz band, but those were more class requirements, marching was my real passion. We didn't have a football program so we never did those big synchronized moving field shows.
