  1.  @Dave5843-d9m  They had planned the Mk 8 but it wasn't going to be ready as soon as it needed so the Mk 9 was kind of a stopgap hybrid between the 5 and the 8 that could be rushed into service very quickly - the first ones were essentially Mk 5 airframes with minimal modifications to take the Merlin 61 engine intended for the Mk 8.
