It wasn't the fuel lines that doomed the Japanese carriers at Midway, it was all the armed and fueled planes in the hangars (and a few on the flight decks), plus all the extra ordnance lying around because they hadn't had the time to return it to the magazines with all the re-arming and re-re-arming going on.
