Can you imagine the outcry if the US decided Canada was getting too friendly with China and invaded Canada in an attempt to annex it to the US? Yes, the US and USSR both invaded other countries during the Cold War but this isn't the 1950s and the post-Cold War international order is built on the proposition that nations should respect the sovereignty and borders of other nations.

  6.  @jelenastefanovic2155  One, there are no US military bases or bio weapon labs in Ukraine, there never have been, and there were no plans or even discussions to put such facilities in Ukraine. Two, I didn't say the US would never invade Canada, I said imagine the outcry if it did, and especially if it did so in order to annex Canada. Three, the sum total of territory the US has annexed from other countries since WW2 is precisely zero - in fact, it's negative, since the US voluntarily granted independence to its largest prewar colony, the Philippines (and had planned to do so even earlier before the Japanese invaded).

And Putin's speech denying the legitimacy and even the historical existence of Ukraine as a country made it pretty clear what his intentions are. He's no doubt willing to settle for less now in order to save whatever face he can from the military debacle he launched. I guess he figures if he drops cluster bombs and thermobaric warheads on 10 or 20 thousand more children the Ukrainian people will be willing to give up on getting Crimea back. For what it's worth, I'd have been in favor of international mediation to look into Russian claims on Crimea if Putin hadn't tried to seize it by violence.

Tuchman's conclusions were fatally flawed by her lack of access to documents that came to light after that book was written which make it clear how much the world war was deliberately engineered by the German general staff. The blundering and misunderstanding was on the part of everyone else who swallowed the German lies about wanting to either prevent a war or limit it to a local Balkan conflict and failed to detect the machinations through which Germany very carefully sabotaged every attempt to preserve peace. If you want to find out what really happened in August, 1914, a good place to start is Europe's Last Summer by David Fromkin.

  13.  @joek600  From 1945 to 1949 the US and UK underwent a massive demobilization while the Soviets maintained an equally massive peacetime army, which they used to quash dissent and democracy and install puppet governments all of Europe, a pattern of aggression and imperialism culminating in the blockade of West Berlin and the blatant and completely unprovoked invasion of South Korea in 1950. That's not "supposed" aggressiveness, it's very real aggressiveness. NATO "provocations" must be seen in light of that long and continuous pattern of Soviet militarism and aggression. It was quite apparent in the late 1940s that Stalin was expanding his empire to the maximum extent he could, subjugating whatever parts of the world appeared to be vulnerable to conquest, and the Cold War was the result of the west's resistance to this violent imperialism. And the brutal suppression of the Hungarian revolution in 1956 showed that Stalin's death hadn't changed Soviet policy significantly in this regard.

  14. For whatever reason, all Scandinavians were frequently referred to as "Danes" in Old English sources regardless of their point of origin. There were certainly some cultural differences and political divisions between the various areas where Scandinavians lived (including much of the southern Baltic coast), but the idea of distinct Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish national identities was not really a thing at that time. Being the King of Norway or King of Denmark didn't really indicate different national identities any more than earlier being the King of Mercia or the King of Northumbria did. Nor would a Norwegian King of Denmark have been considered a foreign occupier or vice versa.

Hide it in a civilian freighter and park it in international waters a few miles off the coast of whatever city you want to destroy, then just cruise in and detonate whenever needed. Imagine the effect of that sucker went off in New York Harbor or San Francisco Bay. Of course you'd need an operator willing to commit suicide, but historically those haven;t been that hard to find... the US actually had backpack nukes deployed in Vietnam but thankfully never used.

  24. It's not a matter of "right," it's a matter of strategic balance. And Stephen Jenkins' post above has it right: the US nuclear deterrent was a response to continued Soviet aggression backed a massive conventional military far beyond anything the west possessed, while the effect (both intended and practical) of the Soviet deployment of missiles in Cuba was to upset that balance and give the USSR the ability to use its massive conventional forces to bully the west without fear of retaliation.

Can "cultural" and "ethnic" be defined in opposition to each other? Is "ethnic" defined purely by genetics? That would lead to some conclusions that would stand a good chance of getting you stabbed in many corners of the world.

Aside from doing away with Israel entirely, of course. For that matter, why does humanity demand a unified and sovereign Palestine but not Kurdistan? Or Tibet?

The actions of Hamas on October 7 rival anything the Dirlewanger Brigade did in Eastern Europe in WW2. That is why people compare them to Nazis. It's not the cause they're fighting for, it's the horrific atrocities they commit in its name. And the comments of some far-right Israelis that also rise to the level of advocating genocide don't change that. But no one is defending them here. If anyone here advocated the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from what they call "Judah and Samaria" I'm pretty sure Sparty would come down on them just as hard.

  39. Completely ignoring the larger strategic context of those deployments, which was to deter the Soviets from launching an invasion with their massively greater conventional forces in Europe. The US did not have a corresponding conventional threat to the Soviets or their empire. The US had thoroughly disarmed following WW2 and the USSR had not; after the pattern of Soviet aggression culminating in the Korean War the US response was to look to its nuclear arsenal to deter the Soviets from launching any further conventional wars.

The reason to have 20,000 bombs is that even if they other guy takes out 95% of them with a successful first strike you'll still have enough to annihilate him in retaliation. That's the theory of Mutual Assured Destruction - the fact that it is impossible to attack without being destroyed by the counterstrike deters anyone from attacking to begin with. If you have 100 bombs, and a first strike takes out 95 of them, sure, you can do horrific damage in reply, but WW2 showed that nations could take far worse than that and keep fighting. So the other guy might be tempted to strike first if it looked like war might be on the horizon.

It was industrializing rapidly before WW1 and fear of its rising power was probably the main reason von Moltke, Falkenhayn, and the other top German generals were so determined to engineer the showdown with the France/Russia Entente in 1914 while Germany still had an economic advantage.

As a general rule, battleships built or designed before Jutland tended to have relatively weak deck armor because the risk of plunging fire at long range was underestimated. Improved optics, particularly rangefinders, and, later, sophisticated analog targeting computers made the probability of scoring hits at such ranges much higher than it had been before.
