I don't know what more you could have done, but the problem here is that you didn't teach that student not to be a sociopath, you taught them to hide it better. That's the problem with sociopaths and psychopaths, it's nearly impossible to really get through to them because they literally can't understand what it means to be empathic, let alone why they should make an effort to do so. The best they can do is learn to better conform their behavior to society's expectations in order to avoid trouble. But I guess that's better than nothing.

Easy way to tell - tell them, gently, that they're making you uncomfortable. The Aspie will look away looking terribly guilty and uncomfortable and then apologize for their lack of social skills. The sociopath/psychopath will laugh and offer a very glib apology probably paired with a smooth compliment and leave you feeling like it was all your fault.
