I think it's more likely that these figures were more likely visualizations of a desired outcome than representations of goddesses. Much like cave painters painted images of game animals and successful hunts in the hope that creating those those images would make their subject become reality for them, people (we have no real way of knowing whether the figurines were made by men, women, or both) created images of healthy, well-fed, fertile women in the hope that making those images would cause their subject to become reality. In other words they were probably a form of representational magic, like voodoo dolls. Anthropomorphic gods/goddesses, worship as opposed to magic being the focus of religion, and devotional objects seem to me to be generally more characteristic of agricultural societies than of hunter-gatherers.

@DrumToTheBassWoop IIRC he told of a terrible war between Atlantis and Athens, which would be kind of difficult since ancient Athens has been very widely excavated and all the evidence shows that it was completely uninhabited at the time Plato was talking about.

@jasperfilardo All modern cities are NOT on the coasts. Many are, many are not. Two of the five largest cities in the Americas are located hundreds of miles from the sea, and in the eastern hemisphere you have Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Moscow, Beijing, Delhi, Seoul, Cairo, Kinshasa, all located well inland. And this has always been true. The largest cities of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia, and the Indus Valley Civilization were all inland.

@Scy You're just showing how little you understand about archaeology. Metal can last many thousands of years in the right conditions, and all of those things will leave traces of their existence under the right conditions. How do you think we know what dinosaur skeletons look like? Almost none of the actual bone has survived tens of millions of years, it was fossilized, meaning the bone decayed and was replaced by minerals that were different from the surrounding substance. The same would happen with plastic. Likewise all those perfect casts we have of human bodies in Pompeii - none of the flesh survived, but it left an impression in the volcanic ash that lasted 2,000 years and probably would last another million if they hadn't been excavated, slowly being filled by minerals that were again different from the original calcified ash. But the big problem you face is that if no evidence could survive the intervening years, how do we have so MUCH evidence of all the less advanced hunter-gatherers who lived at the same time? If you're right, we should have no evidence of them either, but we have mountains of it. Btw no one, literally no one works from an assumption of an Aryan invasion of India any more, that's a straw man Hindu nationalists love to trot out to cover for the complete lack of evidence for their pet (and equally racist) theories about all world civilizations coming from India.

That would require agriculture and agriculture supports MUCH denser populations than hunting and gathering. The entire world population at the end of the Ice Age was no more than 1-1.5 million people, and 1% of that couldn't possibly support an advanced, globe-spanning civilization. Also, such a civilization would produce far more technical artifacts per person, it couldn't possibly not do so.

Before the ice age was over 2.5 million years ago. That's before genus Homo even emerged, our ancestors then were australopithecines barely even making very primitive stone tools. We hadn't even started using fire.

@tecumsehcristero I think you are right. But all of those were the goddesses of agricultural people. The religious beliefs of hunter-gatherers (like, for example, Australian Aborigines) tend to be extremely different from those of agriculturalists and while there are doubtless some echoes of the earlier beliefs I think it's dangerous and almost certainly mistaken to try to draw direct parallels. But as a general rule the gods (to the extent the term is applicable at all) of hunter-gatherers are a lot less likely to be anthropomorphic than those of agricultural people. Humans created gods in the image of animals and impersonal natural forces before we thought to create them in our own image.

@varana Concrete will degrade so that it no longer has the structural properties it did when poured. And much more so if left exposed to the elements. But if it's buried, the chemical difference between the concrete and the surrounding material will still be evident a million or more years later, unless some geological catastrophe destroys the entire layer.

I think it's a pretty big leap from Neanderthals having the physical capacity to produce complex sounds to Neanderthals having complex symbolic language. How and when language developed is still a VERY hotly contested subject. It could very well be that Neanderthals possessed the capacity for some abstract and symbolic thought and language, but not enough to function in modern human society. You can pretty quickly identify someone with moderate to severe developmental disabilities - who is still very much more intelligent than a chimp - with only cursory observation, and I suspect spotting a Neanderthal might be just about as easy. And that person with developmental disabilities is more than capable of having children who will likely be able to function in society with more ease than that parent can.

There isn't much for or against the Flying Spaghetti Monster either, but that's no reason to say it's equally likely to be true as false. It's one thing to propose that prehistoric societies probably weren't organized along gender lines the way more recent and developed societies have been, and quite another to then invent a specific scheme of organization for them and assume that it was the case.

It's not entirely settled that they were a different species. In any case there are some species that can breed fertile hybrids with another closely related species. Some lion-tiger hybrids have proved to be fertile, for example.

But that's the problem for Hancock. We have LOTS of evidence of things from the Pleistocene Era. There are hundreds of sites, thousands of artifacts, evidence of the food people ate and the tools they used and even the art they produced. And all of it is completely inconsistent with Hancock's claims. It's not a question of what sort of catastrophe could destroy all the evidence of human life, it's a question of what sort of catastrophe could selectively destroy ONLY the evidence of advanced civilizations in hundreds of different places but not the evidence of the paleolithic hunter-gatherers living in the same areas. And if you have any ideas in that regard I'd love to hear them. This is the biggest problem with all of Hancock's claims. A small advanced civilization confined to, say, the deep Amazon might have escaped discovery by modern science. A massive, globe-spanning, technologically sophisticated civilization doing so is extremely improbable to say the least. But a small, isolated civilization doesn't fill the hole he claims to see based on comparative mythology.
