This is extremely common in academia as well. Did Marxism get this from academics or did academics get it from Marxism? Yes.

@SchmulKrieger I'll accept your first sentence; I've read Kant, and found him extremely difficult to follow, and been told that part of the problem is that his work is difficult to translate into English in a way that is both accurate and easy to understand. Your second sentence puzzles me, though. Are you saying there are very few academics in America? I'm not sure where you get that idea; there are over 1.5 million people employed as professors at institutes of higher learning in the US, plus another 3 million graduate students.

Glad you worked in the Matrix. I was kind of surprised when it came out how many people, especially young men, found it so mind-blowing an original. None of them had ever heard of gnosticism, or Plato's parable of the cave? We really do a shockingly bad job of educating young people in the US. And of course, the movies incorporated the worst effect of such a religion/ideology, but apparently weren't even aware they were doing it. If nothing in this world is real, nothing you do really matters, and blowing away any number of "coppertops" is all justified by the greater good because they aren't real people anyway (even though the movie made it clear than if you killed someone in the Matrix, the corresponding human being plugged into the Matrix also died). Which is exactly the way fascists and socialists look at you or me. Eggs who must be cracked to make omelettes.

@IrishTechnicalThinker Yes, because cults (among other things) are the One Ring. That was the whole point of the One Ring as a literary device.
