  1. You ask why the Habsburg empire didn't collapse in 1848, and the answer is very simple: Russian intervention. 300,000 Russian troops intervened to crush the Hungarian revolution in 1849. It wasn't so much that the Allies caused Austria-Hungary to fall apart in 1918-19 as it was that they declined to prevent it from falling apart as they had done in 1848-49.
