@QuietManUK Actually, 'they' didn't. A number took advantage of cheap passage advertised for a troopship which was returning to Britain almost empty. A smart move on the part of those who booked, but the recent canonisation of them as noble, saintly, people is, at best, a misunderstanding of history, or at worst a deliberate falsification of it.

@chrisj9700 You appear to have fallen for a myth, or you are intentionally peddling one.

@chrisj9700 Irish migrants were not, until 1920 or so, migrants at all. They were British citizens moving from one part of Britain to another.

@andrewoliver8930 A Greek immigrant who served this country in wartime as an officer in the Royal Navy? The last British monarch not to have been born in this country was George II. In 1683, I believe.

@andrewoliver8930 In point of fact, Edward VIII was forced to abdicate because of his intention to marry a divorced woman. I observe that you do not deny my comment about the birthplaces of every monarch since George II, Interesting that you regard people from the Commonwealth as 'foreigners,' though. I have other things to do, so won't waste further time upon you.

@andrewoliver8930 Actually, the Royals did not 'always' marry German/Danish people. Moreover, you seem to lack any understanding of the concept of marriages for the purposes of state policy. That's it. No more.

@blacktiger955i No, they weren't. Those who came were sensible enough to take advantage of the opportunity to take a cheap passage aboard an almost empty troopship, at a time when unemployment in that part of the West Indies was high.
