Isn't what Reeves is really saying : ' We have a huge majority and will do exactly what we choose to do, which is to look after our core voters, and happily ignore the rest of you little people. We aren't even going to try to hide it'?

@bedandbreakfastman11 Actually, it is precisely the point. Many who have not tried to save for their later years are, in effect, being rewarded for their spendthrift approach. Those who saved are being punished for their prudence.

@bedandbreakfastman11 Perhaps some didn't, indeed. But why punish those who managed to save a little? 'It's daft to give money to people who won't even notice it.' So, who decides whether someone notices it or not? I though the idea of means testing was anathema to many. As far back as 1942, The Beveridge Report proposed a system of contributory benefits which would leave only a residual role for means-tested benefits which were then called National Assistance. Ironic that a Labour Chancellor should be so enthusiastic about the idea.
