Actually 12 miles by train, and currently takes 39 minutes. You could, of course, drive, which I suggest rather defeats the point of this nonsense.

There are only six maglev lines in the world, all in Japan, South Korea, & China. The longest is 18.6 miles long. Totally unproven technology on the scale you propose.

It is a passengers only line.

Stop fussing. As the CEO of HS2 pointed out when questioned about the rapidly rising costs, 'But it's only public money.'

@chrismatthews2040 Could you explain precisely why the country needs more rail capacity, especially since the advent of Zoom Meetings, something unheard of at the time HS2 was conceived, has significantly reduced the demand for business travel? Your comparison of the existing main railway network to 'country lanes' is both a false one, and does little for your argument, by the way. I do, by the way, agree with your comments about successive governments being rail-phobic. This has been the case since Ernest Marples brought Beeching in as his hit-man in the early 1960s. A similar approach was applied, although slightly earlier, to the massacre of electric street tramways in favour of the almighty omnibus.
