@endintiers Which 'basic historical facts' is Starkey getting wrong? I suspect that your real issue is that he is delivering a number of truths that you would rather not hear.

@endintiers How is that ignorance of historical fact? 'The United Kingdom played an important role in the birth of the ECHR, with British lawyers integral to the drafting of the text, and Winston Churchill a key early advocate.' At least, according to Liberty. This was an eight minute conversation. Starkey didn't mention the War of the League of Augsburg, either. How remiss of him.

@tomhayes4782 True. The Irish Free State (Irish: Saorstát Éireann) was the name of Ireland from 1922 to 1937.

@Mac-dx4rd You mean when Britain invaded Czechoslovakia, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Luxembourg, Belgium & the Netherlands? I must have been off the day our lecturers told us about that.

@Mac-dx4rd A lot of people who aren't familiar with the tems of the treaty wrongly think that. Actually, the treaty did not involve the Soviet Union at all. It basically warned that, if Germany invaded Poland, France and Britain would declare war on Germany. Which. of course, they did. It was intended as a warning to Germany, and as a final attempt to avoid a general European war, by ending German military expansion. It did not promise similar action in the event of a Soviet invasion.

@Mac-dx4rd The French & British were not 'worried' about protecting Poland. They were attempting to avert a wider European war, and Poland was the line in the sand.
