@Minime163 I think you will find that it dates back to 1169 when the deposed King of Leinster, Dermot MacMurragh, asked permission of Henry II of England to invite Anglo-Norman mercenaries to help him recover his kingdom, in exchange for lands in Ireland. Dermot died in 1171, having promised Leinster to Richard de Clare, known as Strongbow, who had married Dermot's daughter.

@johnjoe-r8m But it wasn't the DUP who prevented him speaking, whatever their opinions. It was Biden who chose not to speak. Much as he chooses not to answer questions from journalists, other than ones carefully vetted in advance.

@Minime163 Surely you can find an answer for that for yourself? You seem to know about the Nine Years' War. Presumably you also know about the generous surrender terms of the Treaty of Mellifont. Don't you know about the events of 1607, when O'Neill and his primary allies fled Ireland to seek Spanish help for a new rebellion to restore their privileges, and were thus declared traitors by James 6th & 1st?
