@victornewman9904 Wellington was full of praise for Blucher in his 'Waterloo Despatch' and Gneisenau was largely responsible for organising the pursuit which ensured that Boney had no hope of saving anything from the defeat. The reality is, however, that by the time Blucher arrived, Wellington's Allied army had ground Boney's men to a standstill.

@stephfoxwell4620 Which might be why the term 'British' not 'English' was used?

@orlandofurioso7546 No, he wasn't lucky. Wellington only fought at Waterloo because Blucher had promised that he would march to support him. A promise he kept.

@stephfoxwell4620 It didn't turn out well for him, though, did it?

@stephfoxwell4620 I wouldn't tell Wellington that he was half-Irish. As a member of the Protestant Ascendancy, he regarded himself as English.

@stephfoxwell4620 Given that France was a major land power and Britain wasn't, you would expect the French to win. However, the British generally succeeded in their ambition to prevent one major European power from gaining control of the European Channel coast, even if that meant financing other European powers. However, to give a more balanced picture, why not include sea battles as well? The relative populations might also be relevant :- France in 1815 :- 30.3 million. Britain & Ireland :- 17 million.
