  1. Wasp was a smaller version of the Yorktown class, and the US navy believed her to be more vulnerable to air attack than the larger carriers. She operated with the British Home Fleet, until transfer to the Pacific in June 1942. Ranger was quite elderly by WW2, and regarded by the US Navy as too slow and outdated for Pacific carrier operations. From early 1944 she became a training carrier.
